How to Keep Employees Engaged and Motivated During the Holidays

The holiday season poses unique challenges for businesses. Tight deadlines and critical deliverables don’t just come to a stop, yet it’s especially important for employers to encourage health and wellness in the workplace.

If you’re wondering how to keep employees happy and productive during the holidays, try some of these strategies.

Encourage PTO.

This can be tricky for employers during the holiday season, because in most cases you can’t just give everyone the week of Thanksgiving or Christmas off. Nevertheless, make sure your employees know that you value their desire to spend time with friends and family—whether before, during or after the holidays.

Allow flexible hours.

Allowing flexible work hours during the holiday season can have a positive impact on wellness and performance. Communicate up front the rules and guidelines for flexible schedules so that everyone is on the same page from the beginning. This may include rotating “on” and “off” hours between teams, or simply allowing employees to create their own schedules during holiday weeks as long as they’re getting their work done.

Provide stress relief.

The holidays are a stressful time for everyone. When your employees are in the office, come up with creative ways for providing stress relief. Bring a local yoga instructor into the office during lunchtime for some light exercise or go all out and hire a massage therapist to offer 15-minute chair massages.

Feed them.

Let’s face it, everyone loves free food. Splurge this holiday season and offer your employees weekly catered lunches. If you’re into baking, whip up a batch of holiday cookies to bring in to the office. Keeping employees well-fed will help promote health and wellness in the workplace.

Show gratitude.

A little gratitude goes a long way, especially during the crazy holiday season. It’s more important than ever to remind your employees that you value and appreciate them, so show them you care with a handwritten holiday card and a small gift. It doesn’t have to be anything big or expensive. It’s the gesture that matters.
