What is a “Snack Ad”?

What is a “Snack Ad”?

A “snack ad” is short-form marketing content specifically developed to be short, sweet, and to the point. Like a regular ad, but bite-sized! If you’ve ever watched YouTube, you’ve seen snack ads…they are the commercials that run before your video plays.

Why So Short?

Back to our YoutTube example…for years, users weren’t able to skip the ad content that plays before videos. Now, YouTube allows users to skip this content after 10 seconds. So advertisers adapted and the result is super short format content - also known as bumper ads - that delivers a complete ad in a 6 to 10-second window of time.

Snack Ad Examples

AirBnB’s “Canonballer” ad is an excellent example of a successful short-format advertisement…in just 14 words, it engages you and tells a story. And, we don’t know about you, but we can’t watch this five-second Krispy Kreme without craving a doughnut!

Crafting Successful Short-Format Ad

So what makes a snack ad or a bumper ad stand out? There are a couple of things to keep in mind as you create content. First, be mindful of the fact that your viewer is not on a platform to view your ad…your ad is an interruption to their content. So capturing attention is important - a stunning visual or compelling music is a great way to garner immediate interest. Certainly, try to have fun with it; fun content is engaging content! Also, when you only have six to 10 seconds to work with, being clear and concise in your messaging is of the utmost importance - the adage less is more certainly applies here!
